Sweat & Strut Works Out On Walnut Street
After being in business for a little less than one year on Valley Road in Upper Montclair, the studio-to-street apparel shop Sweat & Strut has relocated to Walnut Street. It has the distinct honor of being the first retailer in this blossoming business section, with a host of fitness, dance and yoga studios in close proximity.
Owner, competitive athlete, insurance executive, mom of two, and 13-year Montclairian Melissa Sowa has brought her “passion for high-quality leggings and athleisure designed for every body and activity to women and girls” to the community. Although Sowe was overjoyed to be part of the Upper Montclair Business District, her new Walnut Street neighbors have been “amazing.”
In addition a variety of leggings, Sweat & Strut carries tanks, graphic tees, sweats, grip socks, headbands, totes, jewelry, candles, hair perfume, and other small giftables. Locally made brands include K-Deer, Emily Hsu, WITH, Koral, Sol & Selene, Equipt4u, Alala, Lazy Pants, and PrismSport.
“I love to be in the store to help you find the right fit and function as much as I can. I often suggest that women try a new brand and if they put that trust in me they will feel great. But for when I can’t, I’ve put together an amazing, team that share my passion,” she explained. “Our customers range from fitness enthusiasts to those who don’t work out but appreciate a legging designed to fit you perfectly, in all the right places, so you can run errands or enjoy a night out.” Sweat & Strut will be adding a men’s brand in March.
Sowa stands by her choice of brick and mortar for this type of clothing and doesn’t see e-commerce as a decent substitute: “I believe you should try leggings on to make sure you have the perfect fit so you look good and feel good—you can’t do that online. All brands are sized differently. We will fit you in the size and brand that works best for you.”
