Om, Where Should I Take Yoga?
By Michele Silver
There’s no shortage of yoga studios in Montclair, and it seems that when one studio goes out of business, another yogi or yogini comes along and opens a new one. Each studio has its own personality, type of yoga and unique offerings—it’s a good idea to try a class or two before you make a bigger financial commitment for a pack of classes or monthly membership. Many studios offer first-time student specials. If you’re completely new to a yoga practice, you may want to try a few different types before you find what you enjoy the most.
As of press time, you can get your namaste on at the following places:
Owned and operated by some of the teachers who practiced with Jennifer Kohl, owner of the now-closed Lotus Yoga, the nearly 3-year-old Jaipure Yoga offers Vinyasa (flow) as well as Iyengar, Jivamukti, and aerial and ropes classes. Jaipure does a great job of evolving its classes for new types of yoga and offers all levels, from beginner to more advanced. Mats and props are included with the price of the class. There are often special monthly workshops or classes within a particular theme. There’s a little café in the front of the studio where you can grab a healthy snack or drink along with yoga apparel and gear. If you can’t find parking on the street (which happens a lot in this busy spot), the Maple Place municipal lot is right behind the studio, and there’s a back door for convenience.

If you love hot yoga or want to try it, Be Evolution is the place for you. Tucked in by Lackawanna Plaza, in close proximity to Bobbi Brown’s makeup store and cycling gym, this studio has one room for hot yoga (temperature is maintained between 100° and 106°) and a second room for restorative classes. Mat and towels are available to rent and there are showers, so you don’t have to worry about catching a chill in winter after you’re cooling off from an intense workout. There’s a boutique that sells apparel, snacks and inspirational items. Come prepared with quarters to feed the meters, except on Sundays.

Previously known as Yoga Montclair which was located in Upper Montclair Plaza, this new incarnation, which is part of a small chain, teaches an alignment-based practice “based on the foundations of anatomy and biomechanics.” There’s a wide range of classes from beginner and more advanced to ones for families and children. Mats are available for no extra charge. The lovely studio space with exposed brick walls also has the bonus of its own parking lot and a boutique. Once you decide you enjoy this type of practice, the unlimited monthly membership is a good deal. There are locations in Madison and Newark.

This studio that focuses primarily on the Vinyasa style is technically in Glen Ridge, but it’s so close and such a great place that it had to be included. Founder and co-owner Betsy Davis was a senior teacher at New York City’s Laughing Lotus for 11 years before she migrated to Millburn, NJ, and set up her own studio. After five years in business, she opened a second location in what used to be Karuna Shala. With the tagline of “love, joy, devotion,” Bhakti Barn’s fun, creative, spirited classes set to uplifting music will draw you in and make you a fan. In addition to Vinyasa flow, there are choices in Iyengar and Kundalini as well as special events and retreats to destinations such as India and Bali. A parking lot is located in the back of the studio.
